Before drilling, sanding, or finishing any of the parts, first fit them to your car, observing the fiberglass thickness for possible interference due to the difference between the thickness of steel and fiberglass.Clamp all of the parts together to the loosened running board and fit the headlight bar, if attached to the fenders. Look for interferences with the front fender braces and continue fitting your fenders, then fit the brace to the fenders. Do not try to pull the fender to fit the brace.
When drilling holes, make sure the hole is a sufficient size to provide clearance for your attaching bolts, and to allow for some adjustment as you tighten to the body and frame. When necessary, use large fender washers to eliminate mounting stress at holes. When tightening the bolts, tighten them snug but not over-tight, which could crack the fiberglass.
On some of our fenders, the outer bead edge has been molded deeper than most stock parts. This allows you to align the top of the bead with your running board, then mark and trim the bottom edge of the fender to perfectly align with the bottom of the running board.
When you are satisfied that the parts fit properly, remove them, and clean all surfaces with PPG DX 440 cleaner. Then sand the fiberglass parts with no finer than 180 grit sandpapaer, and roll the edges with 80 grit, then 180 grid sandpaper. Primer with a catalyzed primer. We recommend PPG DP expoxy sealer and PPG K36 urothane primer. Catalyzed primer takes about 24 hours. Then wet sand to 320 grit sandpaper for enamel, and 400 to 600 grit sandpaper for lacquer. Apply the finish.
